Unicorns

Unicorns

In the last several months, Unicorns appear ubiquitous, from a new show on Netflix to randomly popping up on the news to references in songs.  Just today, the radio mentioned the national animal of Scotland is, yes, a Unicorn.  I Googled in doubt, as if I could fact check the radio announcer and find her flawed half-truth, but there was this Unicorn fact staring me in the face.  Unicorn was recently a Final Jeopardy answer in one of Alex Trebek’s final moments which was surprisingly referenced in the Bible 9 times! So not only do Unicorns seem to be everywhere, their references seem extraordinary.  And maybe that is fitting since they are extraordinary creatures.

I might have started noticing Unicorns when I started dating my Partner in Residence who also has a Unicorn persona.  He has his own fair amount of Unicorn items, including Unicorn mirrors above his bed.  But I am not including his personal items on these references found out in the world.

The most incredible reference happened one day last summer in Atlantic City. We had managed a small getaway safely during the pandemic. Most places were closed but the beach was open and there was hardly anyone there.  I had spent a beautiful sunny day on the beach with Partner in Residence wearing his Unicorn bathing suit.  We went back to the hotel at the end of the day to wash off the sand and put on our evening clothes.  The regular night life was shut down but the rides on the pier were running.

We started with the Ferris Wheel. It was the enclosed kind that had a table and you could bring your beer on the ride! Our car stopped at the top allowing us to gaze at the vast ocean under a full moon.  Next, we went on the Slingshot. You can view all of these rides from the beach and I spent the day watching people get flung up into the sky via rubber band style.  I felt equal parts fear and exhilaration as we were strapped into the ball that first flung us towards space and then back like we were falling into the ocean. Our final ride had extensions that spun us around and kept the adrenalin flowing for a few more minutes.

There wasn’t much else to do after the rides since everything else was closed.  We walked down to the beach and sat under the moonlight staring into each other’s eyes.  The lights from the rides glowed bright in the night.  I started to say some lovey dovey words about the magical night we were having when Partner interrupted, looking over my shoulder out into the ocean, “Wait, is that a Unicorn?” I immediately rolled my eyes, thinking he is just being silly and not paying attention to my words of love.  But when I turned my head, there was a Unicorn riding in on a wave out of nowhere, like a gift from the ocean. It was just diagonal from us so he ran over to grab it as it floated up on shore.

I don’t know where a Unicorn float would even come from as I don’t think they are allowed on the public beaches.  It felt like a present from the universe! Partner proudly carried it on his shoulder up and down the boardwalk, telling each passerby who looked his way how he found a Unicorn!  The boardwalk ended with a neat little nook where we placed the Unicorn and the song Jump was randomly playing on some loud speaker.  I was moved to perform a little Unicorn appreciation dance!

Always Be A Unicorn!
