Hope?

A lot of people have been extremely discouraged this week. And that is putting it mildly. There are those who don’t understand the discouragement, the fear, the threat that could undo many of the advances we have come to accept as a new way of life. By advances, I don’t mean that someone might take away my new iPhone or luxury item. I am not worried I won’t be able to sell my $500,000 house so I can upgrade to a $750,000 house. I am not wining about paying taxes on my $150,000 salary. I am not being a cry baby because the other side won the election. I am physically ill at the thought that my daughter who is recently engaged to a woman has to worry whether there will be consequences in her future when applying for a marriage license. I am worried for all of the refugees that have been LEGALLY allowed to enter our country, that they fear being sent away or fear for being wrongly treated on our soil, where they should feel welcome at such a difficult time in their lives.
But when I look around I am reminded of how far we have come and all of the advances in the last eight years will not be so easily overturned. One man did not make all of this happen and one man cannot undo it. Our Governor Cuomo has already stated his support for every refugee in New York, a bold and encouraging statement. I hope to see more and more support in the coming months from people in positions of power.
I think it was hard for many of us who believe in human rights to see so much of the country displayed in red on election night. It symbolized for us that much of the country is against what we believe. It supported our fear that many have hate in their hearts for those of us on the other side. And those who chose the red, they were not to be convinced otherwise. Many of us tried to have conversations with them. But most of them were unwavering, not because of some internal hate, but because they believed what they were doing was right. They believed that their candidate was the cool outlier who will bring them the change they want. They ignored the hate message that was being spread and voted for him anyway, because they wanted the non-politician. They have so much hope in what he will do for them. But I have hope in what he does not have the power to undo on his own. And I also have hope in you and me. Already, we have seen human rights organizations being thrown all kinds of financial support. These things we fear will be undone cannot be undone as long as we don’t let that happen. It is my hope that more people will get involved, join the fight, give their support.
And as far as all of that red around the country, almost half of the people in the United States did not vote. We don’t know how they think? I would like to think their mindset is still malleable. Maybe they were just so fed up and did not like any of the choices. Maybe they need a candidate they can believe in. We have four years to give them one. In the meantime, there are some really great Obama/Biden Memes for us to enjoy!

Excellent analysis, my friend. More horrifying to me than the thought of Trump as president (which is terrifying) is the idea that millions of our fellow citizens actually chose a racist, misogynistic, ignorant bully to lead our country.
Nicely said.
Great post!
